How this was calculated

  1. Split the number: 7.35 = 7 whole hours + 0.35.
  2. Turn the fraction into minutes: 0.35 × 60 = 21 minutes.
  3. Nearest minute: 441 total minutes, already on the mark.
  4. Read it back as hours and minutes: 441 ÷ 60 = 7 hours 21 minutes = 07:21.

The value 7.35 lands exactly on a whole multiple of 1 minute, so the nearest minute policy changes nothing here.

The formula

A decimal hour figure is one number doing two jobs. The part before the decimal point is already whole hours. The part after it is a fraction of one hour, and an hour holds 60 minutes, so multiplying that fraction by 60 turns it into minutes.

Whole hours = the digits before the decimal point
Minutes = the decimal fraction × 60
Total minutes = decimal hours × 60

Worked example

  1. The payroll export says 7.35 hours.
  2. Whole hours: 7. Fraction left over: 0.35.
  3. Fraction to minutes: 0.35 × 60 = 21
  4. Put them together: 7 hours 21 minutes

7.35 is not 7:35

This is the error the page exists to catch. A colon separates hours from minutes; a decimal point separates hours from a fraction of an hour. Reading 7.35 as 7 hours 35 minutes overstates the time by 14 minutes, because 35 minutes is 0.583 of an hour, not 0.35. The two notations only agree when the fraction is zero. Going the other way — hours and minutes into a decimal — is the same 60 in the other position: minutes ÷ 60, which the time to decimal calculator does.

A duration, not a clock time

Everything here is a length of time. 07:21 means seven hours and twenty-one minutes of work, not twenty-one minutes past seven in the morning. That is why the hours field accepts values well past 24: a two-week card can total 82.6 hours, which this page shows as 82:36, and no AM or PM is involved anywhere. The four rounding options

A decimal figure does not always fall on a whole minute. 8.33 hours is 499.8 minutes — 8 hours, 19 minutes and 48 seconds. Something has to give, so the page asks you which increment to land on and then says which one it used, right under the answer.

  • Nearest minute. The closest whole minute to the real value, and the smallest change the page can make. Use it when you want the honest reading of the number and no policy applied on top.
  • Nearest 5 minutes. Twelve marks per hour. Every result ends in :00, :05, :10 and so on.
  • Nearest 6 minutes. Six minutes is a tenth of an hour, so results map onto one-decimal hours: 0.1 h is 6 minutes, 0.7 h is 42 minutes. A system that stores hours to one decimal place is working in this increment.
  • Nearest 15 minutes. The quarter-hour increment: results land on :00, :15, :30 and :45, matching hours written as 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75.

Ties always round up here. An exact half increment — 2 minutes 30 seconds under 5-minute rounding, 7 minutes 30 seconds under 15-minute rounding — goes to the higher mark. That is a stated convention of this page rather than a rule of payroll; other conventions are possible, such as rounding half down, or always up or always down instead of to the nearest mark.

How far the choice can move a result

The gap is bounded by half the increment: at most 30 seconds for nearest-minute, 2.5 minutes for 5-minute, 3 minutes for 6-minute, and 7.5 minutes for 15-minute rounding. Worked through the example on this page, 7.35 hours is 07:21 to the nearest minute, 07:20 to the nearest 5, 07:24 to the nearest 6 and 07:15 to the nearest 15 — a nine-minute spread across the four policies. Where 6 and 15 minutes come from

Tenth-hour and quarter-hour increments come from how worked time is recorded, not from how a decimal is displayed. Under federal rules at 29 CFR 785.48, recording time in fixed increments is accepted where the practice is applied neutrally and does not, over a period of time, fail to pay employees for all the time they actually worked. Rounding a figure for display, which is what this page does, is a different step from rounding the record of when someone clocked in.

Your employer and payroll system set the real policy

Which increment applies to your hours, which way ties go, and whether rounding happens at all are decided by your employer and the software they run. Two rows are worth a second look. 0.25 hours is 15 minutes exactly, but 15 is two and a half sixths, and a tie rounds up, so the 6-minute column reads 00:18. And 0.1 hours disappears entirely under 15-minute rounding, because 6 minutes is closer to zero than to a quarter hour — a reminder that a coarse increment is a poor fit for short entries.

Common questions

What is 7.35 hours in hours and minutes?
7 hours 21 minutes, or 07:21 as a duration. The whole hours are 7, and 0.35 × 60 = 21 minutes. It is not 7 hours 35 minutes.
What is 0.75 of an hour?
45 minutes, because 0.75 × 60 = 45. The quarter-hour fractions follow this pattern: 0.25 is 15 minutes, 0.5 is 30 minutes and 0.75 is 45 minutes.
Why does 8.33 hours come out as 8 h 20 m rather than 8 h 19 m?
8.33 × 60 = 499.8 minutes, which is 8 hours, 19 minutes and 48 seconds. The nearest whole minute to 499.8 is 500, so the page shows 08:20 and reports the 12-second difference under the result. The figure 8.33 is itself a rounded version of 8⅓ hours, which is exactly 8 h 20 m.
Which rounding option should I pick?
Nearest minute if you just want to read the number accurately. One of the others if you are matching a timesheet that records time in 5, 6 or 15-minute blocks — and in that case ask your payroll department which increment they use, since the page cannot know it.
Is 07:21 a time of day?
No. Every output here is a duration, a length of time. That is why totals above 24 hours are fine: 82.6 hours shows as 82:36.
Can I enter zero, or a value under one hour?
Yes to both. 0 converts to 00:00, which is a real answer, and 0.25 converts to 00:15. The field accepts anything from 0 to 9,999 hours. What gets rejected is a blank box, text that is not a number, a negative value, a figure above 9,999, or more than six decimal places.
How do I go from hours and minutes back to a decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the whole hours: 7 h 21 m is 7 + 21 ÷ 60 = 7.35. The time to decimal calculator does it with the rounding shown, and the minutes to decimal chart lists every value from 0 through 60.
